In previous blogs, I mentioned that some of our DJs were also producers. Some of you have asked “what’s the difference between a DJ and a producer though?”
I mean, if you play music, you’re just a DJ, right? Kind of.
It can be a little confusing, but there are DJs that are producers. There are also producers that are DJs. The two aren’t the same though. Let me break it down for you.
DJs basically play and remix music that has already been created. DJs don’t create new music. Yes, they add cool sounds and stuff to songs, but they didn’t actually create a new song.
Think of the people that play at live venues, like clubs or festivals. The songs that they are playing have already been created. They aren’t creating music on the spot. Sure, they might be mixing songs in real time, but they’re picking and choosing from tracks already in existence.
While DJing demands talent, it does not compare to the artistic eye that is required of producers. Not everyone can play songs with a flawless transition. Even less people can create a masterpiece from nothing.
Producers are the ones that sit behind a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) and put sounds (like instrumentals) and vocals together to create a song. You might have seen some artists post pictures of them working with a computer and a bunch of other equipment with flashing buttons.
These pieces of equipment aren’t just for looks. Each of the buttons and boards can imitate different instruments and sounds. Sometimes, you might even be able to spot a keyboard. This is because everything is digitally recorded and manipulated in order for a producer to create a beat for his or her song.
They’re the ones that actually create the material for DJs to use. This doesn’t mean they can’t be DJs though. Producers are DJs when they’re out playing gigs. Some famous DJ/Producers are Skrillex, Tiesto, and Martin Garrix.
Someone who is a fantastic example of this is our very own DJ 4KO (who also goes by Don Dirty). If you check out his Instagram, he is constantly sharing the music he is making (producing). He is also one of our best DJs where he plays at countless events and festivals. A few of his upcoming shows are U4IA fest on February 17th and at Union LA on February 23th. You can click on each for more information and tickets.
